Illustrator Jon Burgerman and the Urgency of Exercise

There’s a delightful interview over at Subvert Magazine with fabulous illustrator Jon Burgerman. One thing that popped out at me: exercise. Jon writes, “I’m pretty unfit but I do manage to get to the gym a couple of times a week if I’m not traveling. Exercise is good for the brain as much as it is for the body.”

And he’s not the only one: Subvert observes that almost every other creative-type that they’ve spoken to is very big on physical fitness, which is surprising because creative people are all a bunch of fumbling nerds.

But the truth is that many of us get a real creative boost from biking, swimming, walking, gyms — many artsy-craftsy types swear by exercise as a source of inspiration and energy. Now obvs, correlation not causation etc etc, and it’s not like you can get any copyediting done while you’re doing bench presses. But stepping away from the keyboard, carving out an hour of your time to move around, being generally fit and endorphinaceous: what’s the down side?
